When we think of a white button-down shirt, the first thing that we probably think of is its role as a staple in the corporate world – crisp, polished, and ready for business. However, this wardrobe essential is more versatile than its reputation suggests. Whether you're heading out for a workout, the pool or beach, a weekend brunch, a casual date, or a day of errands, the white button-down shirt can be effortlessly transformed into a stylish and comfortable piece for any casual occasion. In this post, we'll explore a variety of creative and chic ways to style your white button-down shirt outside the office, proving that this classic item is a must-have for every aspect of your wardrobe. Get ready to unlock the potential of your white button-down and discover how to make it work for your off-duty style!
While I use a white button down as my example, note that you can use any of these tips with a button down in any solid color. The button down that I used here is the Cotton Blend Oversized Shirt from LOFT. The more oversized the button down, the more it lends itself to a more relaxed vibe even when paired with more tailored pieces for work. The laid-back vibe is only enhanced when pairing the oversized button down with other more casual pieces.

I've paired the white button down with a pair of white jeans and white sandals for a completely monochromatic look, but feel free to swap out the white denim for jeans in a different color. Wearing the white button down with jeans automatically makes the outfit look more casual. I chose a sandal, given that it's summertime, but you can try any pair of casual shoes to dress down the look, such as a pair of sneakers or flip flops. I personally like the oversized button down with a more streamlined pant, like these straight leg jeans, to balance out the proportions. I've styled the button down in three separate ways: 1.) Using the half-tuck (aka French tuck), 2.) Untucked, 3.) Knotted. Rolling the sleeves, like I've done here, or pushing up the sleeves, is another way to give the button down a more relaxed look. Plus, it's more practical in the hot summer weather!
For look #2, I've swapped one pair of casual bottoms for another. Here I've paired the button down with a pair of tailored cotton shorts, but you can also pair them with denim shorts, patterned shorts, high-waisted shorts, honestly, the list is endless! For the first look, I've again gone with the half tuck. For the second look, I've knotted the button down over a white tank, essentially making the button down a layering piece that can be easily removed if it gets too hot. Feel free to layer the button down over any color or patterned tank!
This is the dressiest of the five options that I've featured in this blog post. While this look could easily be dressed up for the office with a change of shoes and accessories, I've opted for the Cavall Limited Edition Canvas Espadrille Wedge Sandal in Fuchsia from Viscata, which helps to make the outfit look more casual. To dress this outfit down even further, try wearing a white sneaker with it. Wearing your button down with a midi or maxi skirt is a perfect look for a weekend brunch or event. Choose a brightly colored or patterned skirt for visual interest. Here I'm wearing the Belted Button Maxi Skirt in Bold Pink from Ann Taylor.
If you're looking for a layering piece to wear over your yoga or workout clothes in warmer weather, consider a button down instead of a track jacket, hoodie, or sweatshirt. It's a bit unexpected but works well from a proportions standpoint when paired over a yoga legging.
While you can certainly wear your button down as a cover up when you go to the local pool, a button down is a great item to bring on vacation because of its versatility. You can literally use it in any of the five ways featured here to take you through the gamut of events and activities throughout your vacation. The oversized length of the button down gives just enough coverage in the back and keeps your arms and neck protected from the sun (especially when you pop the collar!). Here I'm wearing the button down over a red 50s style retro swimsuit from Esther Williams. While I've had this swimsuit for several years, you can find it today on Amazon.
The white button-down shirt is a timeless piece that transcends the confines of the office and seamlessly integrates into your casual wardrobe. By mixing your button down with pieces that are inherently more casual, you can create a variety of looks that range from effortlessly cool to elegantly relaxed. Whether you choose to knot it at the waist, wear it over a swimsuit or your workout clothes, or pair it with your favorite jeans or shorts, this versatile staple proves its worth time and time again. So next time you're reaching for something to wear outside of work, don't overlook your white button-down. Embrace its adaptability and let it be the foundation for your most stylish and comfortable off-duty outfits. Happy styling!
