Casual to Chic: Shoes and Accessories that Redefine Your T-Shirt and Jeans

There's something timeless about the pairing of a T-shirt and jeans. Yet this classic combination is also extremely versatile. What if we told you that you could take this basic ensemble from casual to chic, or from day to night, just by changing your shoes and accessories? Accessories and shoes are the unsung heroes of your wardrobe, capable of transforming even the most straightforward outfits into statement looks. In this blog post, we'll explore how you can elevate your T-shirt and jeans with the right shoes and accessories, showcasing endless possibilities for creativity and personal expression. Whether you're running errands or heading to a brunch, a business meeting, or a night out, discover how the right footwear and a few well-chosen accessories can make all the difference.
Note that while completer pieces (like blazers and cardigans) are a third tool in your fashion arsenal to change the look of a base outfit, they are not the focus here as they are generally unnecessary or become so in warm or hot weather.
Working from Home
Working from home 100% of the time, a T-shirt and jeans is one of my go to outfits. Here I am in a simple black T-shirt and white wide-leg jeans. The T-shirt acts as a blank canvas against which we'll showcase various accessories that will dress up the outfit in varying degrees. While at home, my footwear of choice is usually flip flops.
While working from home, there are times I need to get on Teams or Zoom calls with video. Adding a necklace and/or earrings immediately elevates the look of your basic tee. Choose between a delicate necklace or one that makes more of a statement, depending on your personal taste. Here I've chosen the Heart of Viana filigree pendant that I purchased on my recent travels to Portugal to make a statement.
Generally I gravitate to more delicate jewelry, like the Colorful Kiss Pendant below from Crismaria, handmade in Portugal (please check out their store in the Alfama neighborhood if you're traveling to Lisbon. Her peices are amazing!).
Hoops are among my favorite earrings. While I generally gravitate to a simple, clean hoop, here I opted for a more textured take on this classic, also from Crismaria. Meanwhile, the filigree earrings with the Heart of Viana pendant complement but don't distract from the necklace.
Besides jewelry, another way to dress up your basic T-shirt for a video call is by wearing a scarf.
Running Errands
If you need to run an errand, just pop on a pair of slip-ons or sneakers, and you're ready to go!
Brunch/Business Lunch
By simply swapping your flip flops or sneakers for a pair of flats or espadrilles, you're ready for brunch or a business lunch. Can you tell that I love a colorful shoe against an otherwise neutral outfit? Here I'm wearing the Formiga Limited Edition Canvas Espadrille in Cherry from Viscata and the Aria 5 Pointed-Toe Ballet Flat in Pitaya from Vivaia.
Statement earrings are also a good option for dressing up an outfit. Here I chose not to wear a necklace. If you'd like to add one, I would recommend something simple or delicate.
Night Out
Don't let anyone tell you that you can't wear a T-shirt and jeans for a night out! My favorite way to dress up this outfit is by wearing heels and statement jewelry. Here, I've chosen a pair of gold, laser-cut heels that complement the Heart of Viana necklace and filigree earrings.
In the photo below, note that wearing the black heels creates visual balance with the black tee.
If it gets chilly, throw the scarf around your shoulders.
