While decluttering your closet may seem like a tedious task, think of it as a fun opportunity to "shop your closet" and rediscover hidden gems. Embrace the chance to say "yes" to items that reflect your personal style and current lifestyle. Don't underestimate the joy of exploring your closet after a long time – you might be pleasantly surprised by what you uncover. The closet cleanout process involves three simple steps:
If you are time constrained and/or have a lot of clothes, you may want to organize closet one category at a time (ex. pants, dresses, etc).
This category encompasses items that no longer fit (and that you are no longer interested in wearing) or aren't comfortable. It's essential to prioritize comfort since you're unlikely to wear anything that doesn't feel good. Lastly, include items in this category that don't "spark joy" (as aptly put by Marie Kondo).
This is where the self-assessment comes in. Use your responses from the self-assessment to determine whether or not to keep an item. Remember that every item in your wardrobe should align with your current lifestyle and personal style. If you absolutely love an item but the fit isn’t quite right, ask yourself if the issue could be solved by a basic alteration (such as hemming pants).
Your closet is meant for items that you wear on a regular basis. Store the following items in a separate space at your home:
Creating an organized closet is essential for easily putting together outfits. If you can’t see it or easily access it, you won’t wear it. Arrange your clothes by category and then by color to have a clear view of your options. Keep sentimental pieces and archived items separate from your daily wardrobe to maintain clarity. Revisit your archived items periodically and consider donating or selling what you no longer use.
In completing a closet cleanout, you have streamlined and already improved your wardrobe. In taking this essential step, you are halfway to building your perfect wardrobe! After shopping your closet, you are now ready to identify any wardrobe gaps, which is the next step in building a wardrobe that you love.
