Why Getting Dressed Feels So Hard (and How to Make It Easier)

The Five Pairs of Shoes Every Woman Should Own jpg

Have you ever stood in front of a closet full of clothes and thought, “I have nothing to wear”?

Maybe your body has changed after having children, losing weight, or you’re simply entering a new season of life. Perhaps you’ve recently celebrated a milestone birthday. Or maybe nothing about you has changed—you’re simply juggling a demanding career, raising a family, or trying to keep up with a schedule that leaves very little time for yourself.

Whatever the reason, it takes more time and energy to get dressed every day.

Instead of making your mornings easier, it feels like one more thing to figure out.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

The problem usually isn’t that you need more clothes.

It’s that getting dressed has become another decision in an already decision-filled day.

What Is Decision Fatigue?

Decision fatigue is the mental exhaustion that comes from having to make too many decisions throughout the day. As our mental energy decreases, even “simple” decisions can start to feel overwhelming.

And when your life is already full—work, family, appointments, errands, emails, meetings, and everything else competing for your attention—figuring out what to wear can feel surprisingly difficult.

That’s why choosing an outfit can become frustrating even when your closet is full.

It's not necessarily a lack of clothing.

It's a lack of clarity.

When every item you pick up requires a new decision—Does this still fit? Does this go together? Is this flattering? Is this appropriate? What shoes do I wear with this? —getting dressed can become one more item on an already overflowing mental to-do list.

The Goal Isn't More Options

Many of us have been conditioned to believe that having more clothing gives us more options. I’ve had a few friends tell me that they have a hard time packing light for vacation because they want to have choices based on the activities they’ll be doing.

Ironically, the opposite is often true.

A closet packed with items from different stages of your life—or clothes that no longer fit your body, your lifestyle, or even your personal style—creates friction every single morning.

The goal isn't to own more.

The goal is to make better decisions once so you don't have to make them over and over again.

Think of it like organizing your kitchen. Those of you that know me well know that I don’t cook. Yet I’ve taken my share of fun cooking classes and am familiar with the concept of “mise en place” (which translates to “everything in its place”). Just like being organized in the kitchen and having prepped the right ingredients reduces stress and makes the cooking process easier and more enjoyable, the same concept can be applied to your wardrobe.

An Intentional Wardrobe Conserves Mental Energy

One of the biggest benefits of an intentional wardrobe isn't just that you'll look more polished (although that's certainly a bonus).

It's that you'll spend less time thinking about what to wear.

When your clothes work together, fit well, flatter your body, and support the life you actually live, getting dressed becomes remarkably simple.

Instead of asking:

What should I wear?
Does this match?
Is this flattering?
Is this appropriate?

You're simply choosing between outfits that you already know work.

That's a completely different experience.

Start With Where You Are

If you’re going through a life transition, it can be tempting to think you need an entirely new wardrobe.

Most of the time, you don’t.

Instead, start by asking yourself a few simple questions:

Does this item fit my current lifestyle?
Do I feel confident when I wear it?
Does it work with several other pieces in my closet?
Would I buy it again today?

You’ll likely discover that some pieces still truly work for you, while others belong to a previous chapter of your life.

That’s okay.

Your wardrobe should evolve as you do.

Besides cleaning out your closet little by little, you might also choose a curated color palette for your wardrobe, invest in versatile pieces you’ll wear often, and keep a running list of wardrobe gaps (just like a grocery list!) so you can reduce the number of impulse purchases.

Each intentional decision dramatically reduces the number of future decisions.

Style Should Make Life Easier

At The Fashioneaseta, I believe getting dressed should be one of the easiest parts of your day—not one of the most stressful.

That's why I help women create wardrobes designed for the life they’re living today.

Whether you’ve experienced a career change, become a parent, entered a new decade, experienced a weight change, or simply reached a point where getting dressed feels harder than it should, I can help you create a wardrobe that supports the life you’re living now—not the one you lived five or ten years ago.

Whether we're discovering the colors that make you look your best, identifying the silhouettes that best flatter your shape, building you a capsule wardrobe, editing an overstuffed closet, or creating a targeted shopping plan, every service has the same goal: making style feel simpler, more intentional, and easier to maintain.

When you know yourself, understand what works for your body, and wear the colors that best complement your natural beauty, shopping becomes more purposeful, your clothes work together more seamlessly, and getting dressed requires less brain power.

The result isn’t just a more stylish wardrobe.

It’s less stress.

More confidence.

And a little more mental energy to devote to the people, work, and experiences that matter most.

Because style isn't about having the biggest closet or wearing the latest trends.

It's about creating a wardrobe that's designed for your life, reflects who you are, and makes every morning a little easier.

Ready to Make Your Wardrobe Work Better for You?

Whether you’re navigating a life transition or simply trying to simplify busy mornings, you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.
